Meet the Artist
My art is a visualization and exploration of my identity. My experience as a woman in the modern-day world, exploring the relations between myself and my cultural identity as a second-generation Mexican-Irish immigrant. Utilizing the processed based method of printmaking, I create images that represent my moments of grief, peace, growth, childhood joy, and femininity. At times, the multiples from print create the larger piece, experimenting with the viewer reaction to the scale of many prints, or experimenting with how a feeling changes the process from one monotype to the next.
One series of mine, ‘mudanza,’ or ‘moving’ (like moving houses) actively serves as a way to guide and serve my inner child. As someone who did not have the chance to embrace childhood—instead working and maturing as necessary to support my family—reflecting on the past self and allowing myself to play through art has been incredibly healing. This series uses stuffed animals as representations for different ‘selfs.’ Mimi, an old rabbit, was my childhood toy, representing my youngest self. Rene, a sewn strange-looking frog, was made and given to me by my step-mother, representing those awkward teenage years of discovery and identity formation. Bugcat, a blue six-legged cat, was bought for me by my partner after going out of his way to take me on a trip to see my favorite character at a comic con, representing young-adulthood. All of these objects are representative of love in different forms, unquestionable maternal love as a baby, chosen love through changing times, and adult love from romantic relationships. Through all these icons, I create portraits of these characters, scenes, and even physical items to further ideas of ‘play’ in art and life. I don’t know what will represent my future, but who does!
